The game ends when three players are eliminated. If there is a draw by threefold repetition, insufficient material, or the 50-move rule, all active players receive 10 points each. Notice how Yellow had already been eliminated from the game, so their king was the only piece still active. Checkmating a king yields 20 points to the player who delivers the mate, and stalemating it awards 10 points to each remaining active player. When a player resigns or runs out of time, their king remains alive and moves at random. Pieces of eliminated players become "dead." Capturing those pieces does not provide any points. When a player is checkmated or stalemated, all of their pieces become inactive and are grayed out. Notice that each player's eighth rank is different since the board is not a square, and one player's file is the adjacent players' rank.ĭuring the game, a player is eliminated by resigning, being stalemated, checkmated, or if their time runs out. If captured, that queen only yields one point to the player who takes it. In standard Free-for-All games, however, a pawn is automatically promoted to a queen. Just like in regular chess, pawns promote when they reach a player's eighth rank.

By capturing active pieces (+1 for a pawn or promoted queen, +3 for a knight, +5 for a bishop, +5 for a rook, and +9 for a queen).

By checking more than one king simultaneously with a piece other than a queen (+5 for two kings, +20 for three).By checking more than one king simultaneously with a queen (+1 for two kings, +5 for three).By stalemating an opponent (+10 for each player still in the game). There are many ways in which a player can earn points: The goal of this variant is to finish the game with more points than your opponents. As you can guess by its name, in this type of match, each of the four players is battling alone against the other three. One of the most prominent variants of 4 Player Chess is the Free-for-All game. Rules Of Standard Free-For-All 4 Player Chess Players can also customize rules to add even more flavor to their games. In 4 Player Chess, Free-for-All and Teams are the two main variants. The rules for regular chess mostly apply to these games, along with additional regulations specific to each variant. Another difference between 4 Player Chess is the board, which has 160 squares because three extra ranks are added to each side. The game always starts with Red and follows in clockwise order. In FFA a large amount of games could be changed.4 Player Chess is a family of chess variants played by four people at the same time and on the same board.Įach player has a different color for their set of pieces, namely red, blue, yellow, and green. But I think the current rules are simply inconsistent and should be corrected sooner rather than later. This idea has happened multiple times in 4pc games, where a king is unable to be captured because the would-be king capturer is put in check. Teammate captures the attacking piece before it can capture the king.Įxpounding on this, being forced to respond to a check in general is inconsistent and can be disproven by the following example: In regular chess, if a knight is blocking an opposing queens path to the king, why cant that knight move to check the opposing king? Current 4pc logic would dictate the opposing side must respond to the check before the queen can capture the king. Opposing king is captured first by either teammate or person under checkmate (rendering the coming king capture irrelevant)ģ. Teammate blocks path of attacking piece from capturing kingĢ. The king under checkmate can be prevented from being captured ifġ. In regular chess, the idea of checkmate was created because the coming move of the king physically being captured is unnecessary ie the king under checkmate has no possible (legal) moves to prevent itself from being captured in the coming move the goal is still to capture the king. I've seen many people advocating for this and for good reason. The rule change I'm talking about: checkmate being replaced with capture the king in the regular variant. Its time for a big rule change in 4pc teams.
